New Scholarly Study of the Contemporary Biopic

Penny Spirou

Abstract

The following is a review of newly published book Whose Lives Are They Anyway: The Biopic as Contemporary Film Genre (2010) by Dennis Bingham. The review discusses the undervalued scholarly study of the biopic (biographical film) and proposes that Bingham is one of the few scholars drawing attention to its importance. Bingham examines the significance of the biopic throughout history and discusses its evolution from the Hollywood studio system to the current state of the biopic in 21st century cinema. With a particular focus on post-studio era biopics, Bingham argues that the biopic film genre is a valid area of academic study.
